A food safety article in Waveney's In Touch magazine has inspired a Beccles tearoom to promote its own Food Hygiene Rating of 5.
Based in Northgate, Sharel@STEP is a community-based outreach charity with a tearoom serving coffee, light lunches and homemade cakes. Following a recent inspection by Waveney District Council's Food and Safety Team, Sharel@STEP was awarded a Food Hygiene Rating of 5 (very good) - the highest level of food hygiene possible.
Having seen an In Touch article about 5-rated Lowestoft Tandoori, the volunteers at Sharel@STEP requested their own photo-call with the Food Hygiene Ratings 'Big 5 Board'.
Cllr Mary Rudd, Waveney's cabinet member for Community Health and Safety said:
"Under the national Food Hygiene Ratings Scheme, all food businesses are capable of achieving the top Food Hygiene Rating and this can then be advertised to attract more customers. Any food business achieving a 5 rating can ask to be photographed with the Big 5 Board at the time of the visit - this is excellent promotion for businesses and highlights the importance of food hygiene."
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) helps customers make an informed choice about where to eat by highlighting restaurants, pubs and cafes with excellent food hygiene. Food businesses can display their black and green FHRS sticker advertising their current food safety rating, which gives customers an immediate insight into the kitchen and shows how seriously the business takes food hygiene.
Customers are encouraged to check food hygiene ratings when choosing where to eat by looking for the FHRS sticker before ordering food. The ratings of over 440,000 food businesses can also be checked online at http://ratings.food.gov.uk.
Sharel@STEP is a branch of Norwich-based charity STEP (Standing Together Empowering People) which was founded eight years ago to help make a difference to vulnerable women. Sharel@STEP brings these services to the Waveney area and as well as a tearoom, it provides a food bank and drop-in centre for vulnerable people.
In March, over fifty local food businesses received a FHRS rating of 5.
If your food business has recently achieved a 5 FHRS rating and you would like to be photographed with the Big 5 Board, please contact our Food and Safety Team on 01502 562111 or email@example.com.
