Waveney District Council has voted to continue to support the Devolution process.

At its Extraordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 23 November, Waveney gave its backing to a recommendation (voting 39 in favour with 1 abstention and 8 apologies), which stated:

The Council agrees:

1) To reiterate the commitment given previously by the Council to devolution as a means of delivering accelerated growth in the local and national economy and of helping local people and places to fulfil their potential;

2) To authorise the Leader and Chief Executive to:

  • seek an urgent meeting with the Secretary of State to discuss the Government’s intentions in relation to devolution.
  • work with Government and local partners to agree an alternative devolution deal as soon as possible.

3) That further reports are presented to the Council and Cabinet, as appropriate, as the devolution process progresses.

Following this meeting, Waveney’s Leader, Cllr Colin Law, said:

“I am pleased that the Council has voted almost unanimously in support of continuing the Devolution process.

We now look forward to fresh discussions to develop a Suffolk-based proposal and we will explore every possible opportunity to maximise the benefits for our county and our district.”
