Beginning on Tuesday 24 July, Waveney District Council in partnership with Sentinel Leisure Trust is offering FREE swimming sessions for young people over the school summer holidays.

Expanding on the existing ‘School’s Out’ programme of free summer activities taking place on Lowestoft’s South Beach, the Council is now offering free swimming at Waterlane Leisure Centre in Lowestoft and at Bungay Pool & Gym to under 16s living in Waveney.

Cllr Mark Bee, Leader of Waveney District Council said:

“Organised by our East Suffolk Communities Team, the free ‘School’s Out’ summer activities on Lowestoft’s South Beach are now in their fifth year and are incredibly popular.

Working with our partners Sentinel Leisure Trust, we are delighted to now be able to offer free swimming sessions at both of our leisure centres to compliment the beach activities and to open up the free activities to young people across Waveney.

Sport not only helps to keep our young people physically active and healthy, it also ensures they are occupied over what can be a long summer break.”

Cllr Graham Catchpole, Waveney’s Cabinet Member for Operational Partnerships said:

“Part of our work with Sentinel Leisure Trust is to encourage and enable young people to become more active. We hope that these free activities will help young people to try new sports and to use the excellent sports facilities we have in the district.”

Free swimming sessions will be available at both Waterlane Leisure Centre in Lowestoft and at Bungay Pool and Gym for under 16s, starting from tomorrow (Tuesday 24 July) and running for the next six weeks:

Waterlane:

  • Tuesday 12pm - 2pm
  • Thursday 12pm - 2pm
  • Saturday 12pm - 2pm

Bungay Pool and Gym:

  • Wednesday 2pm - 4pm
  • Friday 2pm - 4pm
  • Sunday 1pm - 3pm

There is no need to book but spaces are limited and will be offered on a ‘first come first served’ basis.

  • The free sessions are available only to Waveney residents aged between 0 and 15 years old.
  • Participants may be asked to show identification to confirm their age and home address.
  • Under Sentinel’s pool admission policy, some children may require supervision by an adult (16+) who will be charged the normal admission rate. For more details on the supervision required, please visit  the Waterlane Leisure Centre website or the Bungay Pool and Gym website.

On Lowestoft’s award-winning South Beach, the ‘School’s Out’ activities begin on Tuesday 31 July. Designed for children aged between nine and sixteen, the activities are organised by the East Suffolk Communities Team in partnership with Suffolk Positive Futures.

Running until Thursday 30 August, the activities will take place each Tuesday and Thursday and include tug of war, netball, tag rugby, dodgeball, cricket, rounders, futsal, volleyball, American football, climbing, boxing sessions with Ultimate Boxing and drama and musical theatre with the Marina Theatre. Activities will also be available for younger children aged 5-8, delivered with Inspire Suffolk. Click here for more details and to sign up.

In addition to the free swimming sessions, regular swimming and fun sessions are available throughout the holidays at both Waterlane Leisure Centre and Bungay Pool & Gym. Details of these can also be found at the Waterlane Leisure Centre website or the Bungay Pool and Gym website.
