99.4% (SCDC) and 96.7% (WDC) of businesses have achieved a 3-5 food hygiene rating.

During an inspection, each food business is checked for the following:

  • how hygienically the food is handled - how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored
  • the condition of the structure of the buildings - the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities
  • how the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe.

At the end of the inspection, our food safety officers give the business a rating between 0-5. The top rating of '5' means that the business was found to have 'very good' hygiene standards. Any business should be able to reach this top rating.

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) helps customers make an informed choice about where to eat by highlighting restaurants, pubs and cafés with excellent food hygiene. Food businesses can display their black and green FHRS sticker advertising their current food safety rating, which gives customers an immediate insight into the kitchen and shows how seriously the business takes food hygiene.

Customers are encouraged to check food hygiene ratings when choosing where to eat by looking for the FHRS sticker before ordering food. The ratings of over 440,000 food businesses can also be checked online.

Food safety and hygiene training

To help businesses ensure that employees are appropriately trained, Suffolk Coastal and Waveney District Councils jointly run a nationally recognised training course, the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering.

This course is intended for anyone working in a catering or hospitality setting where food is prepared, cooked and served. Typical environments may include
pubs, hotels, restaurants, contract catering, fast-food outlets, hospitals, care and nursing homes, schools, prisons and the armed forces.

The next dates for the course are 14 February (Melton) and 28 March (Lowestoft). Book your place online and receive a 10% discount!
