East Suffolk residents are invited to test their cycling abilities in a sprint competition on the finishing straight of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour next week.

On Wednesday 13 June, some of the world’s best cyclists will arrive in east Suffolk for the opening stage of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour. The ‘Grand Depart’ of this hugely prestigious race gets underway in Framlingham with Stage One following a 130km route through Suffolk – heading to Woodbridge, Ipswich and Stowmarket, before finishing at North Parade in Southwold. To celebrate this unique sporting event, east Suffolk residents are invited to take part in a sprint competition on the finishing straight.

Ahead of the Stage One finish on 13 June, cyclists of all abilities are invited to take part in the OVO Energy Women’s Tour Sprint Finish competition. Starting at midday, competitors will battle it out to be the fastest rider to complete the 100m uphill sprint section on North Parade.

In a joint statement, Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, Suffolk Coastal District Council’s Cabinet Member for Customers, Communities and Leisure and Cllr Michael Ladd, Waveney District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism said: “The Sprint Finish will give people the chance to cycle on the finishing straight of Stage One of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, in front of the crowds gathered for the race finish. The Women’s Tour brings many visitors to east Suffolk and we are looking forward to seeing these world-class riders race through our district once again.”

All competitors must bring their own roadworthy bicycle and wear a helmet when participating in the event. Any type of cycle can be used and participants are asked to meet at 11.30am at the Pier Café.

Free parking will be available at the Millennium Car Park.
