The newly reopened Deben Leisure Centre is off to a great start as large numbers of people visit the centre to try out the new state-of-the-art facilities.
The centre re-opened on 20 June 2018, following a ten-month closure to undergo a £3.5 million refurbishment. This was the first project in Suffolk Coastal’s five year programme to improve leisure facilities.
There was a great turnout for the opening week, with over 1,300 people diving into the pool and the new gym being put through its paces. In total, over a whopping 2,000 people visited in the first week alone.
Deben Leisure Centre is already doing extremely well with new membership sign ups comfortably exceeding expectations.
Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, Suffolk Coastal’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Customers, Communities and Leisure, said: “It has certainly been a couple of busy weeks for Deben Leisure Centre, which is fantastic to see.
“We have had some really fantastic feedback from our customers, and we are very grateful to them for telling us how they feel about the new facilities.
“Knowing that people are responding so positively to what we have achieved makes all the hard work worth it.”
Deben Leisure Centre is run by the Council’s operational partners, Places Leisure, part of Places for People.
Jeremy Boreham, Area Manager for Places Leisure, said: “We are keen to continue our mission to create active places and healthy people. No matter what age or size you are, we are here to offer you encouragement and inspiration.
“Why not pop in and see us for a swim, relax in the sauna and steam room, or sweat it out in our new fully air-conditioned gym, or maybe even take an exercise class.”
The facilities are not the only thing that has been improved. Deben Leisure Centre now offers longer opening hours to fit around people’s schedule, and is open Monday - Friday 6am - 10pm and Saturday and Sunday 7am - 8pm.
