Some of Suffolk’s supporting partners, guests and councillors have had the chance to ride a section of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, ahead of the Grand Depart next month.
Around 25 riders joined TV presenter, journalist and author Rebecca Charlton and professional rider Chanel Mason of Storey Racing, who will be contesting this year’s Women’s Tour, providing a unique experience for all those taking part. In total, 17 teams will be vying to win the 130km stage hosted by Suffolk on Wednesday 13th June, which starts in Framlingham and finishes in Southwold, the home of Adnams brewery.
Dignitaries rode an official section of the Women’s Tour cycle race, from the historic Framlingham Castle to The Swan Hotel in Southwold. At 32 miles this was the longest media ride ever hosted in Suffolk. They were escorted by Suffolk Police motorcyclists and assisted by an official Women’s Tour support car.
In a joint statement, Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, Suffolk Coastal District Council’s Cabinet Member for Customers, Communities and Leisure, and Cllr Michael Ladd, Waveney District Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism said:
“We are very much looking forward to Stage One of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour on 13 June and know that our east Suffolk communities and businesses will be out in force to show their support.”
Abdul Razaq, Director of Public Health and Protection at Suffolk County Council said:
“I’m thrilled to welcome the Women’s Tour back to Suffolk. It’s fantastic to have so many join us today, getting into the spirit of the event ahead of the big day next month. It just goes to show the whole county's excitement for the Women’s Tour coming to Suffolk in just a few weeks time.
“I hope that this also inspires people to take part in the official Tour Ride, supporting Breast Cancer Care, following the race. There’s still places left, so make sure you sign up to avoid missing out on this unique opportunity.”
Race Director Mick Bennett, said:
“It is great to see partners involved in the Suffolk stage of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour getting out on the route to experience the same roads as the world’s top riders will race on this June. The route for Stage One is beautiful and we hope that the many towns, villages and communities along it will embrace the race and turn out to cheer on the riders on Wednesday 13 June.”
Chief of Growth at Adnams, Duncan Cardwell, said
“It’s great to be able to get a feel for some of the route the pro-riders will follow. Riding through lush Suffolk countryside, past Adnams pubs with the finish in sunny Southwold for lunch at our flagship hotel, The Swan.”
A special sportive will take place two weeks after the race, in aid of Breast Cancer Care. On Sunday 1 July, members of the public will be given the opportunity to ride one of two routes, inspired by Stage One of the 2018 OVO Energy Women's Tour series in Suffolk, giving riders the chance to ride along some of the same roads as world champions and top professionals.
Participants of all levels of experience can enjoy a great day of cycling on an iconic route and fundraise on behalf of Breast Cancer Care.
