Christmas lights, traditional markets and carol services will be taking place across Waveney over the next few weeks as the district gets ready for the festive season.
In Lowestoft, the Christmas lights will be switched on on Saturday 18 November. Starting from 3pm, there will be live performances from Group A, Breeze Redwine and Mark Read, star of this year’s pantomime at the Marina Theatre along with cast members. Organised by Lowestoft Vision, a free competition will run during the afternoon with the winning family switching on the lights at 5pm. Led by a team from The Beach, families will have one hour to find four Christmas elves in shops across the town centre, complete an entry form and return it to the team. Free parking will be available in all Council-owned car parks in Lowestoft from 4pm on 18 November.
On Friday 8 December, a Christmas Spectacular event will take place in the town with a festive parade starting from Station Square at 4pm and finishing at the Marina Theatre. There will also be a Santa Train on London Road North plus fun fair, face painting, bouncy castle, giant snow globe, reindeer and two Christmas fayres with food, drink and gifts. Shops will stay open until 8pm. Free parking will be available in all Council-owned car parks in Lowestoft from 4pm on 8 December.
On Wednesday 20 December, Lowestoft Town Council will be holding its first Christmas Market, in the Triangle Market between 11am - 4pm.
The 40th Christmas Day Swim takes place in Lowestoft, organised by Sentinel Leisure Trust and raises money for local charities.
In Beccles, the Christmas lights will be switched on on Friday 24 November (from 5.30pm), with live entertainment, a festive market, food and drink and late night shopping. Free parking will be available in all Council-owned car parks in Beccles from 4pm on 24 November.
On Sunday 10 December, the Mayor’s Civic Carol Service takes place at 10:30am at St Michael’s Church.
Christmas lights will be switched on in Bungay on Saturday 2 December and on Sunday 3 December, a Christmas gift market takes place in the town, organised by the Bungay Events and Business Association.
On Wednesday 13 December, an open air carol service takes place at the Castle Visitor Centre, starting at 7.15pm.
Halesworth will be switching on their Christmas lights from 4pm on Saturday 25 November. Free parking will be available at Council-owned car parks in the town from 4pm on this day.
On Saturday 9 December, there will be a traditional Christmas market in the Market Place from 9.30am – 3pm. There will be carols in the morning with a performance at 2pm from the Old Glory Molly Dancers. Please note the Market Place will be closed to traffic whilst the market is open.
On Sunday 10 December, the Halesworth Lions will be hosting their Winter Fair from 10am in the Thoroughfare.
On Sunday 10 December, the Friends of Nicholas Everitt Park (FONEP), on behalf of Oulton Broad Parish Council, are organising the annual Carols Round the Christmas Tree event. Starting at 2.30pm, FONEP will have a tombola stall, Christmas crafts and refreshments at the Christmas tree on the Boulevard. The carol service begins at 4pm, with solo performances and performances from local Rainbows and Brownies groups. This will be followed by community singing – please bring a torch to read the carol sheets. The service will be opened and closed by the vicar of St Mark’s Church. Refreshments will be available and the Quay Café will also be open during the event.
On Saturday 25 November, lights in the High Street will be switched on by Father Christmas himself. The High Street will be closed from 2pm. There will also be a carol service on Sunday 17 December at 6pm at St Edmunds Church.
The annual Christmas Day Swim, organised by the Rotary Club of Southwold and District, takes place at 10.30am near to Gun Hill. Money raised will be donated to the Southwold RNLI, the Sole Bay Care Fund and the Southwold and Reydon Recreational Development Council. Register for the swim.
There will be an Advent Service at St Peter's Church on Sunday 3 December (6.30pm) and a Christingle Service on Sunday 17 December at 4pm.
On Monday 18 December, a community carol service takes place at St Mary the Virgin Church in Blundeston, starting at 7pm. A crib service for all ages takes place on Christmas Eve at 5.30pm with an Epiphany carol service on Sunday 7 January at 3pm.
A Carol Service will be held on Friday 10 December, starting at the Village Hall at 3.15pm and then proceeding to the church.
