Following its successful debut last year, a one-day arts festival especially for young people is coming back to Lowestoft.

On Tuesday 22 October, ‘NessFest’ will take place at Lowestoft Library and in the town centre, offering free arts activities aimed exclusively at 11-19 year olds.

Organised by the Lowestoft Cultural Education Partnership with Lowestoft Rising and supported by Lowestoft Vision, the Britten Centre and Lowestoft Library, events will take place at Lowestoft Library and in the town centre between 10am and 5pm, with the new addition of a silent disco from 7-9pm.

Activities include:

  • a live art wall as part of The Big Draw, with Creative Collisions
  • bushcraft jewellery session with Suffolk Wildlife Trust
  • photography workshop with Lowestoft's award-winning photographer Joshua Freemantle
  • special effects make-up with the Marina Theatre
  • make a dreamcatcher with the Woodcraft Folk
  • singing with Snape Maltings Group A
  • dance workshops with DanceEast

Come along to the NessFest information point, located with the Lowestoft Library foyer, to sign up for any of the activities on the day. The first 100 young people to sign up will also receive a free food voucher from Sizzlers.

Phil Aves, Change Manager for Lowestoft Rising said:

“Last year’s inaugural NessFest was very well received, with many young people taking part in the free activities. We’re delighted to be bringing the event back to the town this year and thanks to the support of our partners, we are able to offer local children and young people the opportunity to experience a wide range of arts activities.

This is also perfect timing as it follows the launch last week of Lowestoft’s first Cultural Strategy ‘Celebrating Culture on the Edge, a New Dawn’ and is a classic example of how cultural partners pulling together can bring activity to life for our young people.”

NessFest is delivered in partnership with Making Waves Together, Lowestoft Library, Creative Collisions, Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Woodcraft Folk, Suffolk Artlink, YMCA, Marina Theatre, Lowestoft Rising, Suffolk Music Hub, DanceEast, Actual Reality Arcade, Lowestoft Record Office, Snape Maltings Group A, Lowestoft Vision and Sizzlers.

The Lowestoft Cultural Education Partnership brings schools together with arts and cultural organisations and creative professionals to ensure local children and young people have access to valuable and creative cultural experiences.

Making Waves Together is a partnership project led jointly by Great Yarmouth Borough Council and East Suffolk Council, funded by the national Great Place Scheme. This sees communities and organisations in both areas work together to boost the cultural offer and drive cultural re-imagination as a way of supporting success in the seaside towns. Great Places has been supported by a grant from Arts Council England and the National Heritage Lottery Fund, supported by Historic England.
