Get your boots on for the Seckford Shield touch rugby tournament, as it returns this summer to Woodbridge Rugby Club.
The tournament, organised by Woodbridge Rugby Club with support from Suffolk Coastal District Council, is back on Saturday 18 August from 12:00 at the Club’s grounds at Hatchley Barn, IP12 2PP.
Cllr TJ Haworth-Culf, Suffolk Coastal’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for customers, communities and leisure, said: “This is a fun tournament and a great introduction to rugby for those who have never played before, and I hope we’ll see many local teams join this year.
“The great thing about touch rugby is that there is no full contact, so this is perfect for mixed teams and enables everyone - young, old, male or female - to have a go, get fit and have fun with a bit of light-hearted sporting rivalry.
“If you are not able to play yourself, do come along for a great day out and show your support for the teams. There will be something for the whole family to enjoy with games, music and of course, the tournament itself.”
Touch rugby is a shorter, fun version of rugby that is not full contact and is therefore suitable for mixed teams - from age 14 and upwards.
Games are seven-a-side with unlimited substitutions and there must be at least two players of the opposite gender on the team – with one on the pitch at all times.
The tournament is played between local teams all day and there will be refreshments available. Spectators are welcome to pop in as they please or stay for the whole day.
If you are new to the game or feeling a bit rusty, come along for an informal training session before kick off, taking place at the Club from 11am.
There is also entertainment to suit the whole family, with music from DJ Tallulah Goodtimes, a slip and slide (weather permitted), giant garden games and mini rugby skill games.
The tournament cost £5 per player and includes entry, food and entertainment. There is also camping available on site if you wish to sleep over.
