Pavement licences

New applications for pavement licences
None at present.

On 22 July 2020 the Business and Planning Act 2020 came into force. This Act allows businesses from the hospitality trade to apply for a Temporary Pavement Licence for the placing of tables and chairs on the pavement in front of the premises, for the purposes of consumption of food and drink served from the premises.

On 20 July 2021 The Business and Planning Act 2020 (Pavement Licences) (Coronavirus) (Amendment) Regulations 2021 came into force, which permits a further year for a Temporary Pavement Licence under this fast-track scheme.

On 22 July 2022 The Business and Planning Act 2020 (Pavement Licences) (Coronavirus) (Amendment) Regulations 2022 came into force, which permits an even further year for a Temporary Pavement Licence under this fast-track scheme. This means licences will now expire on 30 September 2023.

Temporary pavement licence online application form

In order to support our local businesses, East Suffolk Council will not be charging an application fee. The main points of the application are:

  • Plan, photos and evidence of public liability insurance must be provided.
  • 7 day consultation period with authorities including Suffolk County Council Highways and the police.
  • Public notice must be displayed on the premises for the duration of the consultation period.
  • Licence conditions must be adhered to
  • All furniture must be removed by 11pm on any day of the week
  • The licence will expire on 30 September 2023
