  • Air quality

The Environment Act 1995 (Part IV) requires that all local authorities carry out periodic reviews of the current and likely future air quality in their area. These reviews follow Government guidance that set health-based air quality objectives for a number of key pollutants and target dates for their achievement. The main pollutants of relevance currently for East Suffolk are nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ) and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10 ).

  • Recycling

From 2026, East Suffolk Council will supply all households with an additional wheelie bin or other container to separate paper and card from plastics, metal, cartons (including Tetra Pak) and glass bottles or jars. This will be in addition to a brand-new weekly food waste collection service. This extra collection service will also allow the Council to adopt a three-weekly waste collection service, rather than the current fortnightly arrangement, without a reduction in the overall combined capacity of household bins.

  • Get involved (doing your bit)

We are working to meet the challenge of reducing airborne pollutants PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 set by the Government, but success will also require a concerted public effort with each person doing their bit by active travel planning and reducing the reliance on the motor car for travel. This will have other additional benefits as participants will be fitter and healthier by choosing to walk or cycle more regularly and, of course, increased enjoyment of the wonderful East Suffolk landscape.

  • Communicating with tenants

The Housing Services Team at East Suffolk Council have introduced text campaigns as a new way of communicating with our tenants. These campaigns are designed to provide our tenants with information and updates on housing related matters and, in most cases, will have useful links to external websites.

  • Woodbridge Junction AQMA - Revoked

To meet national air quality objectives, local authorities must regularly review and assess air quality in their areas. If a location is found where the objectives are not being achieved, the local authority must declare the area as an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and develop an Air Quality Action Plan to reduce air pollution.
