What are adaptations?
Adaptations are physical changes made to a property for residents who have a disability or health condition. They enable residents to live more safely and independently at home.
Adaptations are split into two categories: major and minor.
Major Adaptations usually cost more than £1,000 and include:
- Stairlifts;
- Level access showers;
- Ramps;
- Wash and dry toilets;
- Level access doors.
Minor adaptations are those that cost less than £1,000 and include:
- Grab rails;
- Stair rails;
- Half steps;
- External handrails;
- Lever taps;
- Small electrical changes.
Am I eligible for adaptations?
You may be eligible if you have:
- A physical disability;
- A serious illness or injury;
- A sight, hearing, or speech impairment;
- A mental health condition or impairment.
The person requiring the adaptation must:
- Be a council tenant;
- Be the tenant's partner, child, family member, or another permanent member of the household;
- Live in the property as their main home.

How to apply
Adaptations normally require a recommendation from an Occupational Therapist (OT) or other Health Professional.
OT assessments can be arranged by contacting: Suffolk County Council Customer First Team - 0800 917 1109.
Children OT assessments can be arranging via the Suffolk County Councils Children & Young Peoples Portal.
What do we consider?
When we receive an adaptation request, we must consider several elements before approval is granted.
These elements include:
- Whether you plan to stay in the property long term;
- Whether the property can physically be adapted;
- The cost of the works;
- Whether the property is the right size for your household;
- Any previous adaptations;
- Your support network and personal circumstances.
