A popular cycling event is set to return to East Suffolk following a two-year break brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The first Women on Wheels (WOW) event in the district since 2019 will set off from Ipswich School Sports Centre, in Rushmere St Andrew, on Sunday 4 September.
The mass participation, female-only events focus strongly on the fun, friendly and inclusive aspects of cycling – with each ride featuring routes of an achievable distance for any level of ability and experience.
Any profit from entry fees for the ride, organised by East Suffolk Council and Plomesgate Cycling Club, will be shared between two nominated charities, Lighthouse Women’s Aid and Fresh Start new beginnings.
Cllr Letitia Smith, East Suffolk Council's Cabinet member for Communities, Leisure and Tourism, said:
“2019 was a fantastic year for Women on Wheels, with more than 350 women and girls taking part in one of the rides, and raising about £12,000 for local charities.
“Sadly, all events in 2020 and 2021 had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, I’m thrilled to know it will be back for 2022.
“This is a fun, friendly and inclusive bike ride for women and girls of all ages and abilities. By entering, you are also raising money for two fabulous charities in Suffolk.”
The ride includes two circular routes of 10 and 20 miles, both starting at Ipswich School Sports Centre and heading out into the beautiful East Suffolk countryside, with one rest stop on the 10-mile route and two rest stops on the 20-mile route.
Under-16s can enter either route for £5, while over-16s pay £10 for the 10-mile route and £15 for the 20-mile route.
Venue partner, Ipswich School Sports Centre will be stocking treats for riders to buy before and after the ride, while Pedal Power Cycling will be on hand to check bikes and answer any last-minute questions, and Loose Cannons Conditioning will be leading a warm-up at the start-line.
Plomesgate Cycling Club helped design the route and will be providing a ‘broom wagon’ to assist anyone affected by a puncture or finding the distance a challenge.
All finishers will receive a medal and a goodie bag.
