East Suffolk Councillors have awarded funding to support a new Music Tech Club, helping young people in Pakefield explore music and creativity.
Councillors Louise Gooch, Malcolm Pitchers and Peter Byatt have provided funding from their Enabling Communities Budgets towards the initiative.
The club provides a safe, creative space where participants can learn music production and song writing, improve their wellbeing, and build social connections.
Organised by Pop Arts, the club is for children aged 7-12 years old and takes place on Saturday mornings at The Seagull Theatre.
Councillors Louise Gooch, Malcolm Pitchers and Peter Byatt attended a session on Saturday 14 March, to see the work of Pop Arts in action.
Cllr Louise, Gooch, ward member for Kirkley and Pakefield, said:
“It was great to meet the group and see the facilities. We particularly enjoyed seeing the group in action, it’s obvious that all of them have benefitted greatly from this provision. Hopefully, with Pop Art’s encouragement, Lowestoft has some budding musical talent in our midst.”
Project Leader Adam King said:
“At our club, young people gain hands-on experience with music technology they may not otherwise have access to, guided by experienced music professionals in a supportive environment where friendships can grow.
“The project supports young people aged 7-12 years old living in Lowestoft who may face challenging circumstances. The group is fully inclusive and particularly welcomes those who are financially disadvantaged, have SEN requirements, are young carer, or face other barriers.”
The long-term aim of Pop Arts is to create a sustainable youth music programme that benefits young people and the wider community for years to come.
Initial support came from the Greater Gabbard Community Fund, with the Councillor’s Enabling Communities Budget funding allowing for further development of the project.
The club is keen to widen participation, including future one-to-one sessions for young people aged 16-25 years old. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Pop Arts by emailing contact@poparts.org.
