A major new development on Lowestoft’s seafront has been officially opened, ready for the summer season.
Located next to the Eastern Edge beach huts, Jubilee Parade comprises an eye-catching two-storey restaurant and café complex, new concession units, public toilets, and a Changing Places facility for those with accessibility needs.
A lift is available to greatly improve accessibility along the seafront, connecting the Upper Esplanade with the Lower Promenade and providing access to the restaurant space and first floor Eastern Edge beach huts.
Led by East Suffolk Council, the new complex has been constructed by PJ Spillings and designed by architects Chaplin Farrant. Funded by £4.3 million from HM Government’s Levelling Up Fund and £1.9m provided by East Suffolk Council, the building was officially opened by Cllr Caroline Topping, Leader of East Suffolk Council.
Cllr Topping said: “Jubilee Parade is a striking new addition to Lowestoft’s seafront, transforming the tired concrete chalets which previously occupied this site into a brand-new flagship development. In addition to the restaurant and café businesses, Jubilee Parade will host several leisure operators, as well as providing new toilets and a Changing Places facility to enhance this part of the seafront for everyone.
“The completion of Jubilee Parade marks the culmination of an extensive regeneration programme which has taken place along the seafront over the past few years. This includes the construction of the award-winning Eastern Edge beach huts, installation of the new fountains and improvements to the public space at Royal Plain, a new pocket park at South Quay Wharf, the accessible beach boardwalk and the Multi-Use Games Area, outdoor gym equipment and a boulder climbing area at Royal Green.
“These new facilities, including Jubilee Parade, will greatly enhance Lowestoft’s seafront, attracting even more visitors to the area and ultimately benefitting local residents.”
Two businesses have been secured for the concession units; Peak Open Water Sports and Nuglow UK, who opened for business ahead of the First Light Festival. Peak Open Water Sports are due to open on 5 July.
The rebranded Sunrise at Marty Boys (formerly Sunrise at Zak’s) has also now moved into new premises within Jubilee Parade.
Discussions are underway with potential operators for the first-floor restaurant, which has uninterrupted sea views. Further details about this opportunity.
As part of its social value policy, East Suffolk Council works with contractors to ensure there are clear additional benefits to our communities provided in association with any contract for a major project.
As part of the social value associated with the construction of Jubilee Parade, PJ Spillings has provided 16 sponsored places on the graduate lifeguard programme run by the Waveney Surf Life Saving Club, provided their staff with RNLI rescue training, taken on 3 apprentices from East Coast College and has offered 50 days of work experience placements for local students. PJ Spillings has also supported the First Light Festival for the past two years, with the loan of plant and equipment.
