Local councillors help keep football club kicking

Waveney FC ECB fund

Two East Suffolk councillors have provided funding support to a local football club in Lowestoft.

Councillors George King and Graham Parker, ward members for Gunton and St Margarets, have awarded £4,444 in funding from their Enabling Communities Budgets to Waveney Football Club.

The funding will be used to improve the club’s pavilion at Saturn Close in Lowestoft, supporting repairs to the roof, guttering, plumbing and changing rooms.

Waveney FC has been part of Lowestoft since 1978. Today, the club gives more than 750 people of all ages and abilities the chance to play football, including through its youth, women’s and disability teams.

The club works hard to keep its fees affordable and make sure no child misses out because their family is struggling financially.

Cllr George King and Graham Parker said, in a joint statement:

“Most people in Lowestoft will know a family member or friend who played for Waveney FC growing up. It is a proper community club and an important part of our town’s sporting heritage.

“We are delighted to support a club that does so much for Lowestoft, giving hundreds of local people somewhere to stay active, make friends and be part of a team. With Saturn Close being one of the club's main sites, we wanted to use our budgets to help ensure it remains a great place for local people to play football for years to come.”

Mark Gamble, chairman of Waveney FC, said:

“We are really grateful to Cllr George King and Cllr Graham Parker for supporting the club. Saturn Close is used every week by players of all ages, so this funding will make a real difference and help us provide a better place for people to play football.

“Waveney FC has always been about giving local people the chance to enjoy the game, whatever their age, ability or background. These improvements will help us continue doing that for many years to come.”
