Residents in Lowestoft are being invited to pick up free nutrient-rich compost at an event happening next week.

The compost which has been made from garden waste collected from bins across East Suffolk will be available for residents to collect at the ‘Shovel it Yourself’ event on Friday 1 May at Waterlane Leisure Centre in Lowestoft.

Residents are invited to bring along shovels and compost bags or containers, wheelbarrows or small trailers to collect their compost that’s been created from waste disposed of in garden waste bins in the district.

The event which has been organised ahead of International Compost Awareness Week from 3 – 9 May will give residents the opportunity to find out how they can create their own compost at home.

Fiona Quinn, Head of Environmental Services and Port Health at East Suffolk Council, said:

“We’re inviting residents to bring their shovels with them on Friday 1 May to collect compost made from garden waste produced here in East Suffolk. Created from waste placed in residents’ garden waste bins, the event allows people to take home nutrient-rich compost that can be put straight back into their gardens.

“During the event residents can also find out how they can start composting at home, - the most environmentally friendly and sustainable way to make use of green waste. Residents are welcome to share compost from the event with family or neighbours so that as many people as possible can share the benefits of using compost at home.”

The event will begin at 10am and will run until all compost has been collected. Staff will be on hand to help until 2pm, but residents are welcome to help themselves after this time.

Residents can buy discounted composting equipment through the Suffolk Waste Partnership.
