Waste and recycling collection delays

person delivered new green lidded wheeled bins

While the roll-out of the Better Recycling scheme has been effective in most areas, we are currently working with East Suffolk Services (ESSL) to resolve some initial issues.

These issues include mechanical and hydraulic issues with new food waste collection vehicles, adaptation to entirely new rounds and routes, and operative-staff sickness.

In addition, the recent hot weather has impacted the completion of rounds.

We are sorry if you have been affected and we are working hard to resolve these issues. We know this is incredibly frustrating, however we are investing time and resources in getting this right.

Advice about food waste collection:
While the majority of residents are receiving a weekly collection, collection rates have not been as high as we would hope. Due to the issues we are facing, ESSL is currently prioritising a ‘rhythm’ which aims to ensure that no resident will see their food waste collection missed for two consecutive weeks.

Please follow this advice:

  • Residents should continue placing their large food waste caddies at kerbside, as normal, on their assigned day for collection, with the handle up to lock it.
  • If the caddy is not emptied on the assigned collection day, residents should bring it back in from the kerbside, storing it outside with their other larger bins.
  • ESSL will then seek to ensure that locations which have been missed receive a collection on their assigned day the following week.
  • If the large caddy becomes full during this period, and there is further food waste to dispose of, residents are welcome to place this in their general waste bin for collection.

Advice about other collection streams:
While missed collections can always occur, there has been a knock-on impact on other waste streams, as crews aim to ensure food waste issues are addressed. Any missed collections should be reported by residents to the Council

Advice about outstanding delivery of new bins:
Around 98% of new bin deliveries have now been completed.

•    If customers have not received their new bin(s) they should contact the Council.
•    Once this is reported, there is no need to contact the council again

Thank you once again for your patience and understanding. The Council and ESSL are working as hard as possible to resolve these initial issues and every single member of staff is doing their very best on behalf of residents. We will continue to update you about the broad picture, however for the very latest updates in your area, pleased download and refer to the Council’s mobile phone app.
