All welcome at VE Day event in Felixstowe

Posted by on 17 February 2020 | Comments

Update 17 March: Unfortunately, this event has been cancelled in the interests of community safety.

Felixstowe residents are invited to bring their picnics and celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day with a special event in the town.

On Friday 8 May, a free VE Day event will take place at the Beachside Events Area in Felixstowe, organised jointly by Felixstowe Town Council, East Suffolk Council’s Communities Team, the Royal British Legion and Felixstowe Remembers.

The event is supported by funding from the East Suffolk ward councillors for Felixstowe. Through their individual Enabling Communities Budgets, Cllrs Steve Gallant, Tracey Green, Mark Jepson, Steve Wiles and Mike Deacon donated towards the event. Felixstowe Town Council have matched this funding and are supporting the organisation of the event, alongside the Royal British Legion and Felixstowe Remembers.

Running from midday to 10pm, families are welcome to bring a picnic and enjoy a free concert with 1940s bands and dance acts, along with contemporary live music, entertainment and children’s activities.

Cllr Steve Gallant, Leader of East Suffolk Council and ward member for Eastern Felixstowe said:

“Friday 8 May 2020 will mark 75 years since the end of conflict in Europe as part of World War Two and communities across the country will be taking part in events, street parties and more.

Along with the other district councillors for Felixstowe, I’m delighted to be supporting this VE Day event in the town which will enable local people to celebrate this important date with family and friends.”

Cllr Nick Barber, Mayor of Felixstowe said:

“Felixstowe’s VE Day event will be a great celebration for our town, bringing residents and visitors together to mark this significant moment in our country’s history. The Town Council is proud to play its part in anticipation of a memorable weekend of community-led events.”

In line with national ‘VEDay75’ celebrations, the Last Post will be played along with ‘ringing out for peace’ taking place later in the day. A programme of events can be found at visitfelixstowe.org.uk

Tea and cake will be provided for veterans and those over the age of 75, by invitation only.

East Suffolk Council’s Enabling Communities Budgets support activities delivered by community, voluntary and social enterprise organisations. A total of £412,500 has been allocated for 2019/20 from the New Homes Bonus, funding generated through new houses built in the district.

Distributed equally amongst each of the Council’s 55 members, each ward councillor has a £7,500 Enabling Community Budget to spend on community projects or to develop new projects which tackle community needs in their area.
