Annual Governance Statement
Local authorities are accountable to the public and other stakeholders for ensuring they have a sound system of governance and are required to prepare and publish an Annual Governance Statement (AGS) in accordance with statutory regulations.
The council has approved and adopted a Code of Corporate Governance, which is consistent with the principles of the CIPFA/SOLACE joint framework Delivering Good Governance in Local Government.
The statement includes the result of a review of the effectiveness of the local authority’s system of internal control and provides assurance on whether the authority’s governance arrangements are fit for purpose. Before final approval and publication, the Annual Governance Statement (AGS) will be reviewed by the authority’s external auditor in accordance with the Code of Audit Practice. The auditor will consider if the AGS has been prepared in accordance with the Governance Framework and is consistent with the auditor’s knowledge of the authority. The timetable for publication is set out in regulations, with deadlines amended from time to time. The timetable for publication is the same as that of the financial statements.
