Smoke, dust and fumes
We have powers to deal with smoke, dust or fumes that amount to a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Section 79. Statutory nuisance is not easily defined, in general terms it is 'something that interferes unreasonably with your enjoyment of your property, a regular disturbance that continues sufficiently to be deemed unreasonable'.

Nuisance parking
What is nuisance parking?
Some garages and businesses place cars for sale, for an extended period, on the street, and in lay-bys. This can cause a significant nuisance to local residents and takes up valuable car parking spaces. The same is true with vehicles that are repaired on the street, which can also look unsightly, can lead to damage of the local environment (for example when oil is spilled or leaked) and may also present a danger to passers by. The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 introduced legal controls over these activities.

Environmental permitting
What is a permit?
The operation of certain industrial processes have the capacity to pollute the air around us and are consequently regulated by local authorities under a strict permitting regime in accordance with the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999. The requirements covers a broad range of new and existing industrial processes. Businesses which operate these premises must have a permit. The council decides whether or not to give a permit to an operator. The permit states the ways in which pollution is to be minimised.

Review of polling districts, polling places and polling stations 2023
The Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013 requires the council to complete a review of all Parliamentary polling districts and polling places every four years. The next review must be completed between October 2023 and January 2025.

Listed buildings
A listed building is a building that is of special architectural or historic interest that has been designated by the Secretary of State. Buildings are listed in order to identify and protect the nation’s architectural heritage. Listed buildings can include telephone and letter boxes, milestones, windmills, watermills, farmhouses, town houses, military structures, bridges, walls and churches. There are approximately 4,120 listed buildings in East Suffolk, 59 of which are Grade I quality.
