  • Environmental permitting

    What is a permit?

    The operation of certain industrial processes have the capacity to pollute the air around us and are consequently regulated by Local Authorities under a strict permitting regime in accordance with the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999. The requirements covers a broad range of new and existing industrial processes. Businesses which operate these premises must have a permit. The Council decides whether or not to give a permit to an operator. The permit states the ways in which pollution is to be minimised.

  • Lost and stray dogs

    Reporting a stray dog

    At any time of the day or night, members of the public finding a stray dog may contact us for advice on what to do. You will be asked for your name and address details, a contact telephone number and a description and location of the dog. We will check these details against any reports we have received about lost dogs.

  • Odours and smells

    Our Environmental Protection team has powers of enforcement, under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, to deal with smells that cause a statutory nuisance. A statutory nuisance includes 'any smell arising on an industrial, trade or business premises and being prejudicial to health or a nuisance'.

  • Smoke, dust and fumes

    We have powers to deal with smoke, dust or fumes that amount to a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Section 79. Statutory nuisance is not easily defined, in general terms it is 'something that interferes unreasonably with your enjoyment of your property, a regular disturbance that continues sufficiently to be deemed unreasonable'.
