Tackling climate change in the community

Communities in East Suffolk can take advantage of free energy audits for their community buildings which will identify where they can make savings on their running costs and reduce environmental impact.

Support can also be given to signpost organisations to the latest funding options for improving energy efficiency and put them in touch with installers to obtain suitable quotes.

Following an energy audit, Citizens Advice North East Suffolk has installed LED lighting, insulation and an improved heating system. These actions have resulting in annual savings of £4,262 and 15 tonnes of CO2 (equivalent).

Top ideas for communities

Can your community inspire and empower residents to:

  • Set up a Transition movement in your town or parish?
  • Run litter picks
  • Research low-waste, zero-waste, or product refill shopping options in the area and encourage local vendors to offer these options?
  • Gather excess fruit from village trees to distribute or process as a group?
  • Start community farms, gardens or orchards?
  • Plant up community open spaces for wildflowers and encourage pollinators?
  • Ask the council to manage a roadside verge or public open space in your community in a wildlife-friendly way?

If your idea for community action requires funding, why not discuss it with your local district councillor, each of whom has an Enabling Communities Budget and/or contact the local Community Partnership for your area.

Suffolk’s Community Network has over 160 groups of friends and neighbours who have joined together to take action in their local area.
