A morning cleanup led by East Suffolk Council was held in Kirkley as part of the East Suffolk’s Amazing campaign.

On Tuesday 27 January, teams from the Council, East Suffolk Services Ltd and local community groups joined forces to remove litter, weeds and fly tipping.

Focusing on the London Road South area of Kirkley, teams which included volunteers from Litter Free Lowestoft and Kirkley People’s Forum cleared the local streets, Cliffton Road and Belvedere car parks as well as the promenade and beachfront area, resulting in the collection of 15 bags of waste.

Fly tipping in the area was also addressed by the Council’s Environmental Protection team who monitored and cleared fly-tipping hotspots, with five mattresses, a bed base, two televisions, some carpet and a PVC door reported.

During the event Community Action Suffolk took the time to speak to the public about what community action they would like to see in the area, as well as encouraging groups to register with their Volunteer Suffolk portal to promote their volunteering opportunities.

Cllr Sally Noble, East Suffolk’s cabinet member for the Environment, said: “It was great to see such a good turnout for this event – despite the challenging conditions from storm Chandra. This cleanup was the latest in a series of events for our East Suffolk’s Amazing campaign, which continues to roll out across the district to encourage our communities to maintain the beauty of East Suffolk.

“A huge thank you to all the teams and volunteers who braved the weather for this cleanup event. By working together to preserve East Suffolk’s natural beauty, we hope to inspire even more people to take pride in our community and get involved in local action.”

Want to help keep East Suffolk Amazing? East Suffolk Council is supporting communities to carry out litter picks, report issues and get involved with community composting in their local area.

Litter picking equipment can also be loaned through the Kirkley Centre, 154 London Road South, Lowestoft NR33 0AZ.

Members of the public are welcome to join events run by the Kirkley People’s Forum and Litter Free Lowestoft, who carry out litter picks every Friday at 10am in the Kirkley area and once a month on the beach.
