Trees and woodland

The East Suffolk landscape is enriched and characterised by a wide range of trees and woodlands from the truly ancient to twentieth century commercial plantations.

Trees and woodlands have a critical role in establishing landscape character, providing a diverse range of wildlife habitats, and contributing to climate change moderation.

In recognition of the importance of trees in the landscape, East Suffolk’s tree officers are responsible for :

  • Managing the council’s Tree Preservation Orders and applications for tree works to TPO trees.
  • Serving new Tree Preservation Orders where threatened loss of trees would lead to a loss of public amenity
  • Managing notifications of works to trees within Conservation Areas.
  • Periodically reviewing and updating the council’s Tree Preservation Orders.
  • Responding to Notifications of Hedgerow Removal submitted to the council under the 1997 Hedgerow Regulations.
  • Responding to applications for intervention by the council under the High Hedges regulations.

The team’s responsibilities do not include management of trees on council owned and managed land.
