Public Space Protection Orders

Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO) form part of a wider package of anti-social behaviour (ASB) tools and powers.

PSPOs are designed to deal with a particular nuisance or problem in a particular area that is detrimental to the local community’s quality of life by imposing conditions on the use of that area which apply to everyone.

Public Space Protection Orders can be used to deal with both:

  • Existing problems
  • Problems that are likely to arise in the future

Councils can make a PSPO on any public space within its local authority area. It does not have to be land the council owns. It includes any place in which the public, or any section of the public, has access, on payment or otherwise, as or right or by virtue of express or implied permission e.g. a shopping centre.
