Aids to Navigation in Lowestoft

What are we updating you about?

East Suffolk Council’s (ESC) Coastal Management Team have appointed Red7Marine to remove and install aids to navigation markers from Hopton to Lowestoft.

Where is this work happening?

A map of where the work is taking place is on page 2 of this factsheet. The work will take place between Hopton and Ness Point, Lowestoft. Red7Marine will complete the works from a barge at sea so there will be no impact on access to the beaches. Please avoid approaching the vessels, machinery and equipment in the sea and the area where work is taking place.

When are we doing the work?

The work is due to take place from Monday 18 August 2025 to Friday 29 August 2025 including working over the weekend and bank holiday Monday. We will aim to work in areas away from the holiday parks during the bank holiday weekend. All work is subject to safe working conditions i.e. tide and weather condition dependant.

What will we be doing?

Red7Marine will be removing existing navigation markers on the end of the groynes and installing navigation markers on new piles. The groynes the navigation markers are currently fixed to are unstable due to the seabed lowering. We will work hard to keep any inconvenience to a minimum and ask the public to please take note of the contractor’s signage when work is happening.

Why are we doing this work?

This work is being completed as part of ESC’s statutory requirement to maintain the aids to navigation on our frontage. The work is an important part of ESC’s commitment to ensure their coastal assets are working effectively, helping to maintain our beautiful coast economically, environmentally, and for the enjoyment of communities and visitors for generations to come.

Undertaking regular targeted maintenance means that we can maximise the lifespan of coastal navigation assets, ensuring that we make the most of every pound spent and achieve a better return on public investment. We are supporting the safeguarding of life and local economies by making sure that the Council’s coastal assets are in the condition needed for continued protection.
