Local authorities emergency planning in Suffolk is organised in a joint unit comprising all of the Suffolk District, Borough and County Councils.
Regular reviews of conservation areas are known as Conservation Area Appraisals. The public is consulted, to ensure that the appraisals reflect community aspirations and not simply those of the planning authority. Once published conservation area appraisals provide the local planning authority with the basis for policies which are designed to preserve or enhance all of the aspects of character and appearance that define an area's special interest.

Neighbourhood planning is a Government initiative that enables local communities to influence and take forward planning proposals at a local level. Plans can help determine the location of new development, provide guidance for what new buildings should look like and grant planning permission for particular types of development.
