Repairs to Southwold Harbour fender to begin

Posted by on 7 July 2021 | Comments

Essential work to repair a fender at the entrance to Southwold Harbour will start on Monday 19 July.

Coastal Partnership East, on behalf of East Suffolk Council, have contracted J T Mackley & Co Ltd to complete works on the North Pier fender. Originally built in 1992, the fender prevents vessels from colliding with rock armour around the North Pier when entering or leaving the harbour. The repairs will involve removing and replacing steel piles, timber parts and the navigation light mast and gantry.

For safety reasons, there will be no public access to the North Pier, dunes and beach to the east of the harbour car park for the duration of the works; the works compound will also occupy part of the car park so normal parking capacity will be reduced. Some noise and vibration may occur during the works however limits on working hours will be in place to keep noise and inconvenience to a minimum.

Cllr David Ritchie, East Suffolk’s cabinet member for Planning and Coastal Management said: “We are completing these works during the summer months to avoid adverse weather later in the year however we appreciate this may cause some disruption to those nearby. We apologise for any inconvenience caused however these works are essential for public safety and to ensure that our coastal assets are working effectively.”

Works are scheduled to begin on 19 July and should be complete by the end of August, subject to safe working conditions.
