Authorities combine for collective day of action in Leiston

Posted by on 12 July 2024 | Comments

Council officers have taken part in a multi-agency day of action to improve community safety in Leiston.

Officers from East Suffolk Council’s Communities, Environmental Protection, Licensing, Waste, Private Sector Housing and Corporate Fraud teams were joined by counterparts from Suffolk Police, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, East Suffolk Services Ltd and the Modern Slavery Advisor from Suffolk Police for the operation on Friday 28 June.

Organised by the East Suffolk Community Safety Partnership, the impact event saw partner agencies conduct a series of checks and inspections aimed at strengthening community safety through collective activity.

Checks were also carried out on potential abandoned vehicles, fly-tipping sites, spot-checks on licensed premises and taxi compliance checks. Police also conducted highly visible foot patrols across the town during the day, while the fire service provided support with residential safety checks.

The event saw:

  • Six arrests were made for drug-driving and other traffic offences recorded included speeding, driving without insurance, insecure load, not wearing a seatbelt and driving a vehicle without an MoT. Other speed check sites were monitored at Red House Lane, Knodishall and Saxmundham Road.
  • Urgent enforcement action was taken by Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service following an inspection of a three-storey premises which was found to be a multi-occupied building. The Council's Environmental Health and Housing Needs teams worked to ensure all residents were safely rehoused pending further action.
  • 6 bags of litter collected
  • 3 issues with bin compliance
  • 3 fly-tipping sites
  • 2 suspected abandoned vehicles
  • 3 incidents of graffiti recorded.

Locality Inspector Liz Casey said: “Our impact day not only highlighted a number of areas of concern to residents but also provided a visible presence across the town. Of course, our work continues throughout the year but we were able to reassure people with our multi-agency work and deal with a wide range of offences. I would like to thank our partners and residents.”

The event in Leiston follows similar events held in Lowestoft and Beccles this year.
