A strategy for enhancing a stretch of Felixstowe seafront will undergo further development following its formal adoption by East Suffolk Council’s Cabinet.
Launched in June, the Felixstowe Seafront Development Strategy sets out draft proposals for various potential enhancements of the South Seafront area between Felixstowe Pier and Landguard Point.
More than 700 people responded to a three-week public consultation on the initial concepts – designed by public realm architects HAT Projects following informal consultation with local businesses, organisations and representatives.
Short-term proposals included opportunities for improved lighting and wayfinding along the seafront, while a longer-term vision included adaptations to the Edwardian gardens to create more usable and varied spaces, as well as redevelopment of space for events and outdoor activities, and potential streetscape amendments to boost connectivity and sustainability of seafront businesses.
Following further refinement of designs to reflect feedback received during consultation, the Felixstowe Seafront Development Strategy was presented for adoption by Cabinet members on Tuesday 7 October.
Design concepts for the shorter-term priorities will now be developed into coordinated proposals, incorporating necessary surveys, technical design and detailed cost estimates.
Once the priority projects have been further developed, officers will return to Full Council for approval and allocation of Capital Programme funding for the projects.
Cabinet member with responsibility for Economic Development and Regeneration, Councillor Tim Wilson said: “The adoption of the Felixstowe Seafront Development Strategy sets a clear vision for the future ambition and investment into Felixstowe’s seafront.
“The responses we received to public survey during consultation in June indicated support for the priorities identified in the strategy, which will ultimately help guide our aim of enhancing the area along the seafront.”
