Flood barriers tested ahead of winter weather

Posted by on 23 October 2024 | Comments

Lowestoft’s temporary flood barriers will be tested today in readiness for the winter season.

A training exercise will take place today (Wednesday 23 October) to test the deployment of a section of the temporary flood barriers.

Every year the emergency response against a tidal surge, such as that which happened in December 2013, is tested and those operating the barriers are put through their paces to ensure that East Suffolk Council can provide the best possible response to the threat of a further North Sea tidal surge.

This year the exercise will be held at Commercial Road West. The Water Management Alliance will install the temporary barriers on behalf of East Suffolk Council, supported by East Suffolk Services Ltd.

There will be some reduced access to quayside areas whilst the exercise is in progress however there should not be any access restrictions to roads or footpaths.
