Repair works have been scheduled later this month to fix panels which form part of the tidal flood wall on Lowestoft South Pier.
The glass panels that were installed in 2023 have been damaged by vandalism, with two panels needing to be replaced at a cost of £25,225. The flood defence forms the wall beneath the glass panel, and the repair work will not affect the operation of the flood defence in the area.
The works will be carried out by Flood Control International on behalf of East Suffolk Council from Monday 17 November and are scheduled to be completed by Friday 21 November.
During this time, the road behind the South Pier amusements will be closed to the public, with a diversion in place.
Cllr Mark Packard, East Suffolk’s cabinet member for Planning and Coastal Management said: “It is a real shame that this vandalism has resulted in such a significant cost to the Council and its ratepayers. The glass panels form a vital part of the aesthetic of the area, maintaining views across the marina. It is important to carry out the repairs now outside of the summer season and before we get into the winter period.
“We have judged that it is most important to keep the area tidy, helping to enhance the pier as part of the Council's wider seafront vision for Lowestoft.”
