
Council officers have taken part in a multi-agency day of action to improve community safety in Saxmundham.
Officers from East Suffolk Council’s Communities, Environmental Protection, Licensing, Building Control, Food Safety, Waste and Private Sector Housing Teams were joined by officers from Suffolk Police, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service and the Home Office Immigration Team for the operation on Friday 28 March.
Organised by the East Suffolk Community Safety Partnership, the impact event saw partner agencies conduct a series of checks and inspections aimed at strengthening community safety through a day of collective activity.
The event saw:
4 areas of concern identified regarding littering
2 fly tipping sites located
2 areas of concern identified regarding dog fouling
1 area of damaged highway
1 section of damaged public fencing
1 damaged dog bin located
1 poorly maintained refusals record at a licenced establishment
1 example of a lack of staff training records at a licenced establishment
1 potential premises licence breach
8 businesses visited by Suffolk Police and/or Immigration
1 person arrested and bailed for illegal working
1 Civil Penalty Referral Notice issued
5 businesses advised regarding gas and electric safety
1 new food business identified and request for registration made
1 home fire safety visit completed
1 hoarded property identified
Cllr Jan Candy, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Community Health, said: “This successful day of action allowed officers to work together on improving community safety in Saxmundham. As well as visiting residential streets and pathways around the town, a series of teams visited local businesses to ensure they are complying with the relevant laws. We are grateful to all the officers who took part, as well as the residents and businesses who welcomed the activity.”
Inspector Liz Casey of Suffolk Police said: “Suffolk Police were happy to support the lead partners on this occasion. The day proved successful with officers addressing issues of concern within the community. We look forward to supporting and collaborating on any future impact days.”
The event in Saxmundham follows a similar event held in Lowestoft in March.
