Green-fingered residents are being invited to grab a shovel and help themselves to some free compost made from garden waste collected from bins across East Suffolk.
A ‘Shovel It Yourself’ event is set to take place from 10am to 3pm on Friday 12 May at Waterlane Leisure Centre, in Lowestoft.
As part of International Compost Awareness Week, and as a mark of gratitude for their ongoing recycling efforts, East Suffolk residents will have the chance to take home some compost donated by our composting contractors, Biogen.
The event, similar to one held in Leiston last year, will also promote the principle of home composting and the subsidised home composting offers for Suffolk’s residents.
Kate McFarland, East Suffolk Council Waste & Recycling Contracts Manager, said: “Composting food and garden waste at home is free and reduces the amount of waste being sent for processing. It’s nature’s way of recycling – and it’s great for the soil and plants in your garden.
“We like to think of this event as closing the loop from garden - to bin - to process - and back to the garden again.
“We’d like to invite people along to get some free compost. Just bring along a shovel and a suitable bag or container to carry it home in.”
The free compost will be subject to availability on the day of the event. Residents are welcome to take some for family members or neighbours who would otherwise find it difficult to access the event. Small trailers are permitted but anyone living within walking distance is asked to consider leaving the car at home and use a wheelbarrow.
The event has been organised by East Suffolk Council on behalf of the Greenprint Forum and the Lowestoft and Northern Parishes Community Partnership, with the help of local volunteers.
