Following the relocation of all tenants from St Peters Court in Lowestoft, and agreement reached to demolish the building, the final stages of this process are now underway.
Despite speculation recently on social media regarding the future use of St Peters Court, there are no proposals for alternative uses for the building and East Suffolk Council is progressing with work for its impending demolition.
It was intended that the final demolition would commence sooner, however we have not been able to conclude the relocation of telecommunication equipment from the roof of the building. Unfortunately, the work involved in this, is far from straightforward. However, the Council has been working with the provider to source a suitable, alternative site and it is now hoped that the matter will be resolved before the end of the year.
Meanwhile, work is ongoing to appoint a main contractor for the removal of the asbestos, from the building which, while not a hazard in its current state, must be safely removed and disposed of prior to demolition.
Once the asbestos removal works commence, the Council will be progressing with the procurement to appoint a main contractor for the demolition.
Cllr David Beavan, East Suffolk Council Cabinet Member for Housing, said:
“Demolition is not a straightforward process even though bringing a building down may seem like a relatively simple task. However, I am pleased that progress is being made and that delays are being resolved.”
