History lovers are being given the chance to join East Suffolk Council and Suffolk Archives in charting the fascinating past of an iconic seafront landmark.
A small number of volunteers are being recruited to help conduct and gather research on Felixstowe’s Martello Tower P to support the development of interpretation materials.
The project is part of an ongoing effort by East Suffolk Council and Suffolk Archives to breathe new life into the structure and elevate its status amongst the heritage landscape of Felixstowe.
The aim of the research is to create a historical timeline of Martello Tower P, covering its 200-year lifespan.
Martello Tower P is an iconic historical structure in Felixstowe, dating back to the 19th century when it was used during the Napoleonic Wars as part of Britain’s costal defence strategy. It was then occupied by members of the Coastguard Service who kept a watch for vessels suspected of smuggling, and it was prominent in coastal defence during both World Wars.
Its rooftop cabin is now home to the volunteer National Coastwatch Institution. However, the rest of the tower is currently not in use.
Research will begin in February 2025 and the project will complete in October 2025.
No experience is required for these roles, as volunteers will be provided with training and support.
There will also be future volunteering opportunities to help with public events and open days at the tower.
