Southwold Harbour byelaws and notices - VHF radio communications

All vessels whilst underway within the limits of Southwold Harbour Authority are to monitor Southwold Harbour Radio on VHF Channel 12.

VHF transmissions should be kept short and relevant.

This section of this Notice applies to all vessels and all vessels not under command (NUC) or restricted in their ability to manoeuvre whilst within the limits of Southwold Harbour.

  • All vessels must give notice of their movements and intentions on VHF Channel 12 (Southwold Harbour Radio working frequency) at the following instances:
    • Prior to departure from any Berth/Quay or Slipway
    • Prior to entering the Harbour entrance.
  • The call should include the vessel’s name, position and intention
  • Any vessel that is underway that receives such a call should respond giving its name, position and intention, only if there is no response from the Harbour Master or his staff.

Vessels are reminded that making such VHF calls does not exonerate any vessel from complying with or provide for deviation from the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) and the Southwold Harbour Byelaws.

Vessels not equipped with VHF must contact the harbour office by telephone on 01502 724712 during office hours.
