Tour of Britain travel information

Stage Six of the Lloyd’s Bank Tour of Britain Men cycle race takes place in East Suffolk on Sunday 8 September – starting in Lowestoft and finishing in Felixstowe.

To ensure safety for the race, it will be necessary to close some roads, and to suspend parking in some of the towns and villages on the route.

To minimise inconvenience, we will endeavour to remove cones and lift restrictions as soon as possible after the race has passed through.

Letters have been delivered to all houses and businesses along the route which may be affected by road closures or parking suspensions.

From Friday 23 August, parking suspension signs will be positioned in areas where on-street parking restrictions will apply for the event. ‘No waiting’ cones will then be put in position on Saturday 7 September. Please ensure vehicles are removed from these areas before restrictions apply.

There will also be a rolling road closure in operation across the route for around 15 minutes before the estimated time of arrival until approximately 10 minutes after the last rider has passed.

Lowestoft

Felixstowe
Parking will be suspended and the road closed on Sea Road (between Tacon Road and Beach Station Road) between 6pm on Saturday 7 September and 11.59pm on Sunday 8 September. Parking will be suspended on the following roads, and the roads closed, between 12.01am and 11.59pm on Sunday 8 September: Micklegate Road (15m from Sea Road) Beach Station Road Sea Road (Beech Station Road to Undercliff Road West) Cavendish Street (Sea Road to Manning Road) Manning Road (Cavendish Street to Undercliff Road West) Undercliff Road West (Convalescent Hill to Spa Pavilion). Residential access and access for Spa Pavilion staff will be available during the closure. A one-way system will be in place along Undercliff Road West travelling east from Langer Road to Convalescent Hill until approximately 2pm when the road will close until the race has left at approximately 5pm. By train

Greater Anglia operates a regular hourly service from Ipswich and Norwich throughout the day to Lowestoft. It is approximately 1 hour 26 minutes from Ipswich to Lowestoft and 55 minutes from Norwich to Lowestoft.

There is a regular hourly service from Ipswich to Felixstowe with a journey time of approximately 30 minutes to Felixstowe.

The Ipswich to Felixstowe line is part of the East Suffolk Lines community rail partnership.

By bus

FirstGroup operates frequent bus services in East Suffolk.

Lowestoft by car

Royal Green Car park will be closed to the public on Sunday 8 September and there will be some parking suspension in place on Claremont Road and London Road South.

Felixstowe by car

Due to road closures and limited parking, please consider parking outside the town and completing your journey by train or bus.
The Promenade car park, the Pier car park, Convalescent Hill car park, Beach Station Road car park and Undercliff Road West car park will be closed on the seafront on 7 and 8 September.

Car parking

Due to road closures and limited parking, please consider parking outside the towns and completing your journey by train or bus.

There is no dedicated spectator parking for this event. Find the nearest car park.

Where parking charges apply, payments can be made in cash or online. Details are available within each car park.

If you do need to drive, please park responsibly. Do not park on the race routes, in lay-bys or on verges.

Accessible parking

Please note there is no dedicated Blue Badge parking that can be booked in advance. You will need to make use of existing provision within Lowestoft and Felixstowe. These places will fill up quickly and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis only.

Felixstowe by ferry

The Harwich Harbour Foot and Bicycle Ferry runs from the John Bradfield Viewing Area at Felixstowe to Harwich and Shotley. It is the only public ferry service connecting Suffolk and Essex. The ferry operates from the 29 March to 31 October 2024. Please visit the website for full timings and fares. It is advisable to buy tickets online in advance. The ferry will only operate in safe weather.

There is dedicated bicycle parking in the tour villages at both Lowestoft and Felixstowe for up to 160 bikes.

Make sure to stay behind the course boundary and stay safe.

If you’re planning to watch the action along the route, please don’t park on the race routes, in lay-bys or on road verges. Don’t get in the way of the peloton or individual riders.

When enjoying the race at the start and along the course, keep to the paths (where available), respect the local community and take your rubbish with you when you leave.

Keep dogs on leads.

Don’t impede the barriers or branding.

Remember, taking selfies is fun, but turning your back on the race is never a good idea. Please face the oncoming riders and race convoy at all times.
