Ending a council tenancy

A tenancy with the council can be brought to an end for a variety of reasons such as moving to another, bigger or smaller home, relocating to another part of the country, or even sadly, upon death of the tenant or the need to move into a residential home. Whatever the reason, it is important that your Housing Officer is informed as early as possible.

It is important that a tenancy is brought to an end in the correct format and that the obligations of the tenancy are kept. To help with this the Housing Officer will come out to the home of the person wishing to bring a tenancy to an end to ensure a properly completed notice is made.

We will also talk about the property and the rent to ensure that everything is properly dealt with. We aim to be at the property within 3 working days but will take the effective date of notice the Monday following notification to us.

You can still use our online service for Tenants, myHome East Suffolk, to view your rent statements even after you have ended your tenancy. You can also add a forwarding address if your new home is not an East Suffolk Council property.
